“Making
the world smaller—and better understood—one
song at a time,” the women of Yeh Dede
weave their voices into an intricate musical
tapestry while their hands shuttle back and forth
drawing polyrhythmic patterns and driving danceable
rhythms from an array of drums and guided by
the melodic ukulele and flute. Strands
from diverse traditions entwine as this multicultural
band of gifted women lift our spirits along with
their voices in richly layered and textured five-part
harmonies. Themes of peace and love emerge
from the lush patterns traced a confluence of
African, Middle Eastern, and Afro-Cuban traditions.
Sacred community arises as the audience is moved
to clap, sing, and dance along with the irresistible
rhythms coaxed by strong and tender hands from
Yeh Dede’s congas, shekere, djundjuns,
cajon, djembe, and collective voice and heart.
