An evening of ancient music and poetry that will touch the depths of your soul and stir your inner fire. Prayers on Tanbour is Heyraneh’s devotional expression based on the ancient sacred Kurdish modes, with the words of Rumi, Hafez, and Baba Taher sung in Persian and English. Heyraneh plays the tanbour an ancient long-necked Persian lute; used in the devotional practices of the Kurdish dervishes, becoming one of the very few women to play it. She is joined by Los Angeles-based world percussionists Jamie Papish, Christo Pellani and special guest Vardan on Armenian Woodwinds. Heyraneh, was first introduced to Sufi mysticism and music by her grandfather. Her exquisite music and lilting voice will soothe and enchant you even as it transports you to mystical realms of beauty and transcendence.

A largely volunteer effort, based on the intention to utilize the arts festival model to build genuine community cooperation and understanding, the World Festival of Sacred Music is presented by Foundation for World Arts and UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance.
