“Erotic Love as Devotion,” is an evocative piece with live music accompaniment performed in the Northeast Indian Manipuri style and based on the Gita Govinda-a 12th-century Sanskrit text depicting the love story of Lord Krishna and Radha. Symbolizing the relationship between supreme being and devotee, the Gita Govinda is sung and danced during temple rituals. Sohini Ray directs the Manipuri Dance Visions Ensemble in this production, which reproduces the choreography and costumes created by her late guru, Bipin Singh.

“Penitence and Praise” is a multimedia performance exploring the Semana Santa: The Saeta Project (Holy Week) processional traditions of Spain. Conceived and directed by Deborah Lawlor, the piece is danced by the incendiary flamenca Briseyda Zarate and a chorus of three modern dancers, featuring the thrilling and heart-quickening saeta, a form of flamenco that is performed only during Semana Santa, the penitential season that evokes emotions from solemn to jubilant. Musicians include Vicente Griego and Gabriel Osuna.

Presented by Manipuri Dance Visions and Fountain Theatre
